TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — For Justin Thompson, a dedicated 5-year MBA candidate in Florida A&M University’s School of Business and Industry (SBI), this past summer was about more than textbooks and case studies. It was about real-world application and sharpening his skills in PepsiCo, one of the world’s most competitive corporate companies.
Based in Kennesaw, Georgia, Thompson worked with the Frito-Lay division as a Sales Intern, diving into the fast-paced world of corporate sales.
From managing store merchandising to learning the rhythms of territory management, his role was anything but ordinary.
But thanks to the structure, discipline, and professionalism instilled by SBI, he felt ready to rise to the challenge.
“My SBI resources and training prepared me in numerous ways,” Thompson said. “For one, just being professional in communication, whether email etiquette or knowing how to speak to your coworkers and bosses. SBI teaches you to match the environment you’re in, and that goes a long way.”
That professionalism caught the attention of his mentors at PepsiCo.
Sabrina Delgado, Frito-Lay Department District Sales Leader who oversaw Justin’s internship, had nothing but praise for the rising Rattler.
“It was an absolute pleasure getting to know and work with Justin over the course of his internship,” Delgado shared. “He is a quick learner who impressed
me with how rapidly he was able to grasp the many moving parts involved in day-to-day
management. His work ethic, eagerness to learn, and professionalism make him a valuable
asset to any team.” Justin Thompson had the chance to apply what he learned as a FAMU SBI student at one

Despite the support, the internship did not come without its challenges.
For Thompson, one of the biggest lessons has been balancing his responsibilities, both as a helping hand in stores and as someone accountable for his own sales targets.
“It’s easy to get caught up in merchandising in a store for hours and lose track of the day,” he said.
“So, I had to develop a plan every morning, a real strategy. Because what doesn’t get done one day just carries over. Organization is key.”
That ability to adapt helped Thompson not just keep up but stand out.
“Justin consistently demonstrated leadership qualities,” Delgado stated. “He communicated clearly and effectively, asked thoughtful questions, and was always punctual and prepared. His proactive nature and willingness to go above and beyond have not gone unnoticed.”
Although the internship is over, Thompson is already looking ahead.
His hope—to return to PepsiCo after graduation in a full-time position. Nevertheless, he's also using the opportunity to see where his skills and passions might lead him.
“I’ve gained a lot of insight into sales, but I’m also thinking about how these skills can apply beyond food and beverage; maybe in equipment, healthcare, or even sports,” he said. “I plan to take some time to explore, but I definitely see a future for myself in sales.”
With a solid grasp of corporate sales and an eagerness to grow across industries, Thompson represents the future of leadership coming out of FAMU.
